Mountain Gorilla Trekking Vs. Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trekking

0
Gorilla Watching in Africa

Instead of trying to make your life perfect, give yourself the freedom to make it an adventure, the best adventure you can have is to experience a primate safari to visit the mountain Gorillas & Eastern Lowland gorillas in Africa.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Africa.

From my Experience travelling to the gorilla destinations in Africa, Mountain Gorilla Trekking is expensive compared to the Eastern lowland gorilla trips, this is because the permits are more expensive. Gorilla permits are the only factor that makes gorilla tours expensive compared to wildlife adventures.

Mountain Gorilla trekking destinations are divided into three destinations by Country and National Park. There are 4 Places in different countries that you can experience this and each destination comes with it’s own unique adventure. Mountain Gorillas can be visited only in Uganda, Rwanda & Democratic Republic of Congo, and there are only 880 remaining in the world.

Mountain Gorillas in Uganda

Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa, it’s diverse landscape encompasses the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains and immense Lake Victoria. Uganda is commonly known as the pearl of Africa, and being a British colony the most spoken language is English yet other local Languages are spoken more broadly. Uganda is ranked high when it comes to primate safaris as well as Wildlife sightings and is among the top destination known for a combination of Gorilla & Wildlife Safari.

All Mountain Gorilla Destinations are located in the south western part of Uganda, we call this the Switzerland of Africa. Here there are two destinations for Mountain Gorilla trekking,  Bwindi Forest National Park and the Mgahinga National Park.

Bwindi Forest National Park.

The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is in south-western Uganda and it is the best destination for Mountain Gorilla Trekking. The park is part of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest which is situated along the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) border, next door to the Virunga National Park and also on the edge of the Albertine Rift.

Bwindi Park is a sanctuary for colobus monkeys, chimpanzees, and many bird species such as hornbills and turacos. It is most notable for the 480 Bwindi gorillas that live there, this is approximately half of the world’s population of the critically endangered mountain gorillas.

Four habituated mountain gorilla groups are open to tourism: Mubare; Habinyanja; Rushegura near Buhoma; and the Nkuringo group at Nkuringo. An added feature of trekking in Bwindi is that the lodges are located within the jungle.

Population: The number of mountain gorillas has increased from the 2010 estimate of 786 after a count in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Mgahinga National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a national park in the far south-west of Uganda near the town of Kisoro, it forms part of the Virunga Massif.

Mgahinga National park is located in the Virunga Mountains and is contiguous with the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the smallest national park in Uganda (about 33.7 km). It is very important as it hosts both the endangered Mountain Gorillas and the Golden Monkey.

Population: There is only one Gorilla Family to be visited in Mgahinga National Park, we can’t estimate the Gorilla population in this region because they are cross boundary Primates.

Costs of the Gorilla Permits

Mountain Gorilla Trekking permits in Uganda are cheaper compared to those in Rwanda for the Volcanoes National Park experience.

The Cost of the trekking permit in Uganda differs depending on whether it is peak season or low season.

The permits costs USD500 for April, May and November and in other months of the year they will costs USD 800.

Time of Travel

Mountain Gorilla Trekking can be done throughout the year, these dense jungle destinations don’t experience dry seasons, it rains throughout the year, meaning gorilla Trekking tours can be done from January all the way through to December.

Rwanda

Rwanda is a landlocked East African country with a green, mountainous landscape. It is renowned for mountain gorillas and golden monkeys in the famous Volcanoes National Park, home also to 4,507m-tall Mt. Karisimbi and 4 other forested volcanoes. It is also known as the land of thousand hills.

Rwanda is bordered by Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Rwanda is in the African Great Lakes region and is highly elevated; its geography is dominated by mountains in the west and savannah to the east, with a number of lakes throughout the country.

Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park lies in north western Rwanda and borders Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. This national park is known as a haven for the mountain gorillas. It is home to five of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains (Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo), and spans 160 sq km covered in rainforest and bamboo. The park was the base for the zoologist Dian Fossey.

Cost of the Gorilla permit

The Rwandan Gorilla permit is fixed to USD 750 from January to December due to the fact that they don’t have seasonal discounted prices.

Time of Travel

Gorilla Trekking can be done throughout the year and just be aware that it rains the entire year.

Virunga National Park in Congo

In the Congo you can visit the centre for orphaned gorillas which is located in the Greater Virunga National Park.

Many travel guides will advise you not to visit the Congo as it can be unsafe, but it is ranked as the best experience for mountain gorillas and also offers the opportunity to hike the active Volcano of Nyiragongo which can be summited in just two Days .

In Democratic Republic of Congo

The Democratic Republic of the Congo – abbreviated to DRC, is a country located in Central Africa. The DRC borders the Central African Republic, with South Sudan to the north; Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania to the east; Zambia and Angola to the south; the Republic of the Congo to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the southwest. There are two sites for Lowland gorilla Trekking Adventures in the Congo.

Eastern Lowland gorilla trekking in Kahuzi Biega and Maiko National Park

Eastern Lowland gorilla Trekking can be experienced in the Kahuzi biega National Park as well as the Maiko National Park.

The Kahuzi-Biega Park is a protected area near Bukavu town in the eastern area of the DRC. It is situated near the western bank of Lake Kivu and the Rwandan border. Many travellers visiting Kahuzi biega national park use the Ruzizi Border of Rwanda. The park is the best destination for Eastern lowland gorillas and there are a number of Gorilla families that tourists can see.

In Kahuzi Biega National Park the eastern lowland gorilla is a subspecies of eastern gorilla, which is endemic to the mountainous forests of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Eastern lowland gorillas that live in the Kahuzi-Biega and Maiko National are important populations for their species.

Cost of the Gorilla Permit

Congo Gorilla Permits are the cheapest at USD 400 pp.

Don’t miss to the opportunity to see for yourself the difference between these gorillas groups.

Established in 1970 by the Belgian photographer and conservationist Adrien Deschryver, the park is named after two dormant volcanoes, Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega, which are within its limits. With an area of 6,000 square kilometres (2,300 sq mi), Kahuzi-Biega is one of the biggest national parks in the country. Set in both mountainous and lowland terrain, it is one of the last refuges of the rare species of Eastern lowland gorilla (Gorilla beringei graueri), which are listed as endangered under the IUCN Red List.

Prices for Safaris in East Africa

0

There are three kinds of safaris from which any intending traveler ought to make a selection the kind he/she would like to take up depending on various circumstances.The choice is always for the traveler depending on his/her desires and or budget.Below are some of the points that determines one’s safari;

Many times a safari will be overpriced when there are too many hands involved, especially if you buy a safari package in your country of origin. There can be a marked difference between the prices of safaris and just because you are paying more, does not mean you are getting more for your money.

Transportation costs such as fuel, vehicle and English Speaking Driver. We use Safari type vehicles that have a pop-up roof for maximum viewing of wildlife and birding on game drives. Transportation Costs make up a large part of he safari, fuel being presently at around US$1.40 a liter. There is a difference in price between a 4 wheel drive Safari Van or a modified Toyota Land-Cruiser.

National Park, Wildlife Reserves, Ugandan Places of interest entrance fees, game drives, boat rides, ferry crossings, etc. They are the same no matter what price range you choose.

Your choice of what to do while in Uganda also affect the price of your safari. If you include gorilla tracking the pass fee has just been increased to US$800 for Uganda and US$ 1500 for gorilla safaris in Rwanda. Chimpanzee tracking is the next largest expense in national parks ranging from US$50 to US$150 depending on where you will be tracking them plus park entrance of US$35 per day for foreigners and then there is the vehicle and driver.

Lodging and accommodations in Kampala and the National Parks come in three basic categories and in each one there is a certain cost range.

Luxury accommodation can range from US$200 per person per night to as high as US$800 per person per night full board depending on the location, the type of accommodations available and so on. Luxury accommodations are available at most locations in or near National Parks and Wildlife Reserves.

Midrange or Moderate rates from about US$75 to US$200 per night per person and are available in most locations. The difference is the decor and furnishings in the rooms, the quality of food served. A bit more basic than luxury where dinner might be 4 or 5 courses served. Some moderate accommodations are just a few dollars below up-market in certain areas and the difference in quality is miles apart but we will certainly advise you.

Budget ranges from US$15 to US$75 per day per person. It is usually very basic and not self contained in most cases. There are some areas where budget accommodations are not advised and we will make you aware of those places.

Full Board safaris are our standard, but in cases of budget safaris where meals have to be figured in, we simply do not do stripped down safaris that leave out important things such as food, bottled water.

Africa may be the poorest continent on earth – however that does not make it the lowest priced continent to visit unless you are bouncing on the back of some overland truck safari where what you get a good portion of our ever-red dust, feel like you have been on a roller coaster and it turns out not at all as you have envisioned it.

There are certain things that one is sure of by virtual of dealing with a competent and reliable tour operating company like us and below are the most striking ones;

  • Quality Vehicle with pop-up roof for best wildlife viewing.
  • Tour Guide Driver with over 5 years of experience and a safe driving record.
  • You share the vehicle with only and only your entourage
  • On Game Drives we add a Uganda Wildlife Authority guide who knows where the wildlife is on that day and enhances your opportunities to see the most and well as furnishing you with first hand information about the park and all its habitats
  • Only better budget facilities – often that border on being compared to a moderate facility with room that have their own bath – are clean and comfortable – no bed bugs allowed.
  • Normally budget facilities that have a good restaurant with nice meals and a variety of choices are picked
  • There is always bottled water on board of vehicle for your consumption.
  • The cost normally includes all permits and entrance fees – no fine print here or the words exclusive of.
  • An itinerary is always provided to you detailing all the areas to be visited such that you are well acquainted with the flow of the journey.
  • If you are going on 5 or longer day safari, you are given a mobile phone to use in order to stay in touch with your tour guide at all times, and the companies’ office and with your family as well.

Important Things to Know before Going on Safari

0

A safari in Africa sounds exotic, no doubt, but you do realize that there is a ‘code’ to be followed, invisible even if it is…It is a code that every traveler must hold sacred, because when you go out into the heart of wilderness, you can’t afford to insult these sacred rules…

To make the most of your trip, do remember that it depends on how well you adapt to the African wildlife…and for that, you have to follow some of the “golden rules” while on an African Safari…

The following is a list of do’s and don’ts that you have to bear in mind…

Do:

  • Dress Right: Do wear something that makes you feel comfortable. You are going out into the wilderness, so it is a good idea to wear clothes that cover your legs, you don’t want to come in contact with insectivorous shrubs. Wear summer clothing, a light raincoat with proper sun protection.
  • Blend In: with the natural wilderness. Don’t wear something that will attract unwanted attention, and disrupt your fun activities…the animals might give you the slip if you fail to camouflage yourself properly.
  • Keep calm: Under no circumstances should you panic. It makes matters worse. Make sure you don’t stray from the pack and stroll off on your own. This is especially true when you are on a walking safari. Even your enthusiasm needs to be kept under wraps, lest it gives you away on a bird-watching or animal watching trail.
  • Keep the Right Company: Stick to your group and guide at all times, and you will be safe.
  • Travel Light: Especially if it is a walking safari, make sure you travel light. Just pack the bare essentials, the camp will provide for the rest.
  • Carry Protective Gear: Sunscreen, caps, hats, raincoats and a small Swiss army knife can prove very handy out in the wild…even in the face of adversity.
  • Extra Protection: Carry your personal meds in case you have some specific allergy, or health issues.
  • Photography: Do make beautiful memories…and capture them for a lifetime worth of memories…
  • Necessities: Always keep the important documents, like passport, visa, insurance details and currency etc on you! Whether you are travelling with a group or separately, these are indispensable.
  • Anti-malaria medication: Africa is still mosquito ridden and malaria is still the most frequent disease to fell travelers. Make sure to carry anti malaria meds and insect repellents.
  • Medical services: Always keep important phone numbers and carry your meds. Take stock and get your medicines from the big pharmacies in town.
  • Drinking water: Carry adequate water and make sure to drink and carry clean water whenever possible.

Don’ts:

  • No Littering: take only memories and leave only good deeds behind.
  • Ignorance Hinders: Make sure to have at least some amount of know-how about the policies, traditions and key points of the place you are visiting.
  • Too Close for Comfort: Especially when you are going for a driving safari, keep safe distance from the animals. These are wild animals, unaware of etiquette and training or the human touch.
  • Conversations: Make sure you think before you speak. Don’t insult any of the traditions the locals endorse.
  • No Souvenirs Please: Do not stray from your guide and group in search of stones and natural souvenirs.
  • Child Menace: Keep your kids under control. They are your responsibility. Make sure they do not stray or do something silly…
  • Foolish Photography: Don’t click everything that comes your way, especially local folks, they might not like it…
  • Fire Alert: Do not leave behind any combustibles; it endangers not just humans, but the wildlife too…
  • Cell phone Hazard: Especially when you are on a driving safari, or travelling on foot, pay attention to what is ahead instead of what is on your phone. Besides, reception can be a little tricky out in the wild.
  • Do not Disturb: the local traditions, and the local things.

When it comes to animals:

  • Keep safe distance
  • Do not feed them
  • Make sure you sit on the animal, not hang from it
  • Take care of children when near animals.

Now that you know the “golden rules “of African safari, follow them and enjoy your safari…it is a once in a lifetime matter…
