For the second time in life, I look forward being part of the Rwanda gorilla trek in the Volcanoes national park. This time it’s special for it marks the 2017 gorilla naming ceremony that takes place in Musanze district the beautiful land of Rwanda tourism and conservation treasures. Without these wonderful primates who become our friends in one hour of photography and observation, Rwanda would be very different and less vibrant than it now is.

In 2014 when I first visited Rwanda had a lot about the entire Rwanda gorilla tracking adventure and wanted to unveil the truth about the mountain gorillas and its general tracking experience and it found it worthy visiting again? One of the best gorilla habituated families to track in Rwanda is Susa with lovely impressive silverback and mother gorillas that make the encounter ground dramatic and interesting through out the one hour duration in the jungle. It was a very difficult decision to make since work and family where demanding but the adventure spirit and determination made it come to pass. It can look costly but the entire gorilla tracking experience is too exciting and overwhelming and it lives each day you think about Africa and its unique features.

If looking at amazing attractions and scenery, Rwanda does very well in every aspect ranking best not only as the great gorilla tracking destination but also one of the top eco-tourism destinations in Africa. Its daily conservation effort in natural attractions has given life to many beautiful living primates and wildlife and has impacted many other African countries to do the same. Therefore conservation is one of Rwanda’s crucial travel aspects and a concern of every tourist, traveler, government and the local community. They all have a responsibility of respecting natural attractions and support their well being.

The importance of conservation is evidenced in the neighboring countries of Rwanda that is Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, DR Congo, and many others. However, may the big thanks go to whoever supports natural conservation in one way or the other, since mountain gorillas are prime attractions of Rwanda and are the reason for Rwanda popularity across borders? It’s good to revisit the country for the second trek due to the great beauty the giant apes hold in the wild jungle.

In the Africa tourism and travel industry, Uganda is not often considered among the top holiday destinations. The country is overshadowed by its more famous East African neighbors, Kenya and Tanzania, as well as South Africa, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia in the South. However, travel enthusiasts with better information know that a safari in Uganda is an experience incomparable to any you can have in other African countries.

Be warned however, gorilla trekking is not an easy exercise. Most often, you will have to trek for two hours or more in dense forest terrain before sighting the first troop of gorillas. You therefore need to be healthy and reasonably fit to undertake this activity. The Uganda government restricts the numbers of people allowed to go tracking gorillas at any one time. As a result, gorilla trekking permits are in very high demand. To stand a good chance therefore, you should purchase your permit from a reputable tour operator at least three months before your intended date of travel.

You have probably heard of the tree-climbing lions of Lake Manyara national park in Tanzania. But did you know that you can find the same in Uganda? The Ishasha plains of the Queen Elizabeth national park is the place to be to witness this.

The Murchison Falls, Kidepo valley, and Queen Elizabeth national parks are among the best destinations for wildlife safaris in Uganda. Of course, you cannot compare Uganda to Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, or South Africa when talking about wildlife safaris. But the country does offer a unique experience that you will not find elsewhere. You will find both the cape buffalo and the smaller forest buffalos, the savanna elephants and the smaller forest elephants, and hundreds of other animal species. Rwenzori Central Circuit Trail

Mount Rwenzori is a block mountain range sitting in Western Uganda, at the border area with the Democratic Republic of the Congo- DRC. Part of the block mountain range sits on the Virunga side in the D.R. Congo and in Uganda, it is perched within the Rwenzori Mountains National Park– RMNP.

The Rwenzori Mountain block extends 4800kms, 120kms by length, 65kms by width and Margherita peak is its highest peak. Formation: Rwenzori Mountains formed as a result of earth’s crust shift leading to uplift of rock that consisted of gneiss, granite and quartzite.

Presently, the block mountain attracts several hikers across the world who come to challenge themselves in order to conquer the 6 distinct mountain ranges that make up the Rwenzori Mountains. The ranges are separated by just deep gorges and they include Mount Baker, Mount Speke, Mount Gessi, Mt. Stanley, Luigi di Savoia & Emin. All the 6 Rwenzori Mountain ranges are magical with beautiful glaciers, white snow-capped peaks, the main reasons the Rwenzori Mountain range is often referred to as the Mountains of the Moon. The block mountain is remarkably a valuable source of water for the world’s longest River- the Nile River.

Climbing the Rwenzoris

Mount Rwenzori climbing/hiking is with no doubt a major highlight of all Uganda safaris in Rwenzori Mountains National Park- RMNP. Thousands of enthusiastic hikers throng the Rwenzori National Park each year mainly to hike to the Margherita peak of the Rwenzori Mountains/Mountains of the Moon which is on Mount Stanley. The Margherita peak is the highest of all Rwenzori Mountain ranges peaks, rising up to 5109m.

Climbing Rwenzori Mountain ranges is excellently done beginning from its designated paths and the main trails or routes worth starting your trek to the Margherita peak include Kilembe Trail to the South, near Kasese Town and The Rwenzori Central Circuit. All the two trails of Rwenzori Mountains lead climbers to the magical valleys, glacial lakes, bogs, alpine and finally, you get to stunning snow-capped summits at 5109m.

The Rwenzori Central Circuit Trail

The Rwenzori Central Circuit Trail is the most trekked of all the Rwenzori Mountain ranges trails. Experienced or senior climbers on Rwenzori hiking safari prefer this trail due to its rewarding experiences. However, you need to be physically fit to conquer the high altitudes to Mount Stanley where Margherita peak sits on 5109m. All treks along the Central Circuit begin with briefing at Nyakalengija offices and you wind through the 1646m to Nyabitaba Hut on 2652m. You can tailor your Rwenzori Trek and combine it with a gorilla trekking experience in the nearby Bwindi Impenetrable Forest on a 14 Days Rwenzori and Gorilla Safari Experience offered by the Climbing Rwenzoris, a local tour operator.

The Central Circuit may require you to spend at least 8 days to have a complete round trip during your Rwenzori climbing adventure in the Mountains of the Moon. Trekking through this trail, you pass by Nyabitaba hut where you will probably have some stopover for overnight then proceed to John Matte Hut 3414m. Note, all the varying ranges can be conquered on different days. From 3414m, you trek to Bujuku Hut on 3962m, where then you will continue hiking 4kms to access Elena Hut and finalize your hike to 5109m.  Descending journey the huts that may add on the list include Guy Yeoman Hut at 3261m and this is approximately 8kms off from Elena Hut.

Kilembe Trail

Kilembe Trail is another most exceptional Rwenzori hiking trail, known to offer remarkably distinct experience of its own. The trail is found along the Southern side of Rwenzori Mountain ranges, on the side of Kasese Town, Western Uganda. The Kilembe trail hiking journey starts from Kilembe and ushers you to Nyamwamba Valleys, glacial lakes and later, connects to the Rwenzori Central Circuit Trail along Lake Kitandara. Kitandara Hut is available stopover hut for hikers to retire for a night and at Kitandara, expect uninterrupted views of the scenic Mount Baker peaks.

Best time to travel to the Rwenzori Mountain ranges for mountaineering

Traveling to the Rwenzori Mountain ranges for mountaineering can be done at anytime of the year.  But the dry season or drier months of the year offer the best or excellent Rwenzori Mountaineering adventures. In every year, there are 2 seasons of importance to consider when planning for Rwenzori Mountain hiking safari holiday that is the dry and wet season.

The firs dry season in the Rwenzori Mountain ranges runs from June to August and the second phase begins from December till February. The two drier season phases are characterized by low rainfall amount with the trails kept drier making it easier to navigate through the block mountain’s steep slopes, bogs, valleys etc before you get to the Margherita peak or any other peaks. At times yes, it can rain especially around the afternoon hours but by this time, hikers would have covered a good distance of their journey and perhaps finds them having a relaxed lunch stopover at the designated huts en-route.

Two wetter seasons-the rainy season shouldn’t be left out when planning Rwenzori Mountaineering adventure. This usually occurs starting March to May and November, a period when heavy rains are experienced. During these months, the trails can be slippery while bogs turn muddy. Dry or wet season, all interested climbers should be adequately prepared to challenge themselves with the strenuous altitudinal hikes. 

What you should expect to carry for Rwenzori Mountain climbing-Uganda

Only essentials items are required for your Rwenzori mountaineering adventure. These include insect repellents, hiking pants, safari hat-waterproof, a good camera for great pictures of glacier peaks, waterproof hiking boots, rain jacket, head lamp, gardening gloves, backpack, snacks, body belts, sleeping bags, ankle gaiters etc.

Accommodation facilities 

All categories of accommodation facilities are available at Rwenzori Mountains National Park for visitor overnight stay that is budget, mid-range and luxury options. They include among others Hotel Margherita, Equator Snow Lodge, Mihunga Safari Lodge, Ruboni Camp and many huts which you can find en-route to your peak. The huts include John Matte Hut 3414m, Nyabitaba Hut 2652m, Elena Hut, Guy Yeoman and Bujuku Hut.

Getting there

For hikers on plan to visit Rwenzori Mountain ranges, access to this block mountain easier either by road or air. By road, you drive from Kampala connect via Mubende to Fort Portal or Kampala linking to Mbarara, Kasese to Rwenzori Mountains National Park in the West. By air, you get to save a lot time-fly from Entebbe Airport and land at Kasese airstrip where you get transfer by road to the park.

Your choice of what to do while in Uganda also affect the price of your safari. If you include Gorilla Tracking the price per person on Safari has just increased by US$700 and US$1500 for gorilla safaris in Rwanda. Chimpanzee Tracking is the next largest expense in parks ranging from US$50 to US$150 depending on where you will be tracking them plus park entrance of US$35 per day for foreigners and then there is the vehicle and driver.

Lodging and accommodations in Kampala and the National Parks come in three basic categories and in each one there is a certain cost range.

Luxury accommodation can range from US$500 per person per night to as high as US$5000 per person per night full board depending on the location, the type of accommodations available and so on. Luxury accommodations are available at most locations in or near National Parks and Wildlife Reserves.

Midrange or Moderate rates from about US$150 to US$400 per night per person and are available in most locations. The difference is the decor and furnishings in the rooms, the quality of food served. A bit more basic than luxury where dinner might be 4 or 5 courses served. Some moderate accommodations are just a few dollars below up-market in certain areas and the difference in quality is miles apart but we will certainly advise you.

Budget ranges from US$15 to 75 per day per person. It is usually very basic and not self contained in most cases. There are some areas where budget accommodations are not advised and we will make you aware of those places.

Full Board Arrangement is our standard, but in cases of budget safaris where meals have to be figured in, we simply do not do stripped down safaris that leave out important things such as food, bottled water.

Africa may be the poorest continent on earth – however that does not make it the lowest priced continent to visit unless you are bouncing on the back of some overland truck safari where what you get a good portion of our ever-red dust, feel like you have been on a roller coaster and it turns out not at all as you have envisioned it.

This question of diet on safari has become more and more popular given the situations of persons. Most people have changed their eating behavior to much more lighter or keto diet. Some it’s not because they are keeping their bodies in shape, it’s because of heath `issues that are forcing a change in diet.

Regardless of the diet plan and changed people is still much in love with traveling and will soon find it hard or easy when it comes to what they will eat on safari.

What is diet? Diet is a daily routine of eating specifically designed by doctors, nutritionist or personal trainers to persons with health issues or those trying to keep their bodies in shape.  These will include prep meals, pre-planned meals, vegetarians and those with a specific eating disorder disease.

Most people have embraced the keto diet, but what is keto diet? The ketogenic diet or keto diet is a very low-carb.It involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat. This reduction in carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called Ketosis.

While people want to travel they would love to maintain their strict keto diets. But will this be found on any safari or they will have to pre-plan their meals. Travel with a few snacks ore eat whatever is available.

According to Linda a hotel owner in Uganda, they get different clients with different priorities in eating and they have tried to incorporate all these kinds of diets in their meal preparations. She says the good thing with Uganda is a lot of vegetables are available almost everywhere making preparing these kids of meals much easier.

What is in the strict diets on safari

The good news is that Uganda is known for having very vibrant food traditions. Popular meal options for those on a strict diet (such as diabetic, gluten-free, ketogenic, low-carb and other diets) include but aren’t limited to:

You will find organically cultivated and freshly served fruits. Avocado, pears, oranges, apples, bananas, pawpaw’s,  pineapples, cucumbers, grapes, lemons, tangerines and so on. Getting these fruits you will not need any hustle they are easily available and cheap.

Whether fresh or dry, the most available nuts include groundnuts, coconuts. While the almond nuts are cashew nuts are only in supermarkets. These ones you will need to be specific with the lodge or buy and travel with them.

Vegetables are everywhere in all shapes, colors and some are very free. In Uganda we do not serve food with gout greens or vegetables as to some f our cultures it is soup served with other foods like plantain and dodo.

In cases of diabetic or low sugar diets, unripe plantain porridge dish is perfect for vacationers on a diabetic diet. Not only is it low in glucose and sugar, it is also easily digestible and finger-licking good. When booking with your safari organizer try mentioning all these so that you find them ready.

When it comes to meats from fresh, boiled, grilled, sautéed, fried, baked to roasted; meat can be prepared. Chicken, Fish is also available. However much we have fish and in different types we may not be having the sardines or tuna’s very fresh as we also import. Uganda has fish like tilapia, gold fish, Nile perch, lung fish and much more.

When making a reservation with health complications are traveling on diets safari, please speak and speak and speak. Do not get tired of reminding the tour operator that you traveling on diets. They are the best in safari arrangement in cases like these.

Self Driving a 4×4 in Africa – Tips for Beginners

Congratulations on taking the plunge and hiring a 4X4 for an awesome off-road African adventure!

As a newbie to the wonderful world of 4-wheel drive, you’ll fall into one of two camps – those who think they know it all already, and those who are totally terrified and have no idea how to handle ‘their’ Camel-man-mobile safely, let alone get the best out of it!

These tips are for you, whichever side you fall; never be too proud or too petrified to learn, for your sake and the sake of your passengers and fellow off-road track users.

Speed & Momentum

If you hit a spot of trouble DON’T accelerate – it can get you into a worse position. Slow down and take it easy – this helps you to keep traction and your tyres will work for you instead of spinning aimlessly.

When approaching an obstacle, you need momentum. The trick is to start a little way back to gain the momentum you need. This is a skill which you will master over time.

Limits

Don’t try new tricks when you’re out alone. Test your limits when you’re with more experienced drivers.

Mud

Use a stick to test a new mud hole for depth and softness. Remember a soft hole can prove impossible to escape! Enter the mud hole with a little momentum and if you feel that you’re getting stuck turn the wheel left to right to gain traction. Once you’ve gone as far forward as you can try reverse out.

Windows

Keep the windows up to avoid a mud shower or a face full of dust.

Stuck

If you are truly stuck, try letting a little air out of your tyres for better traction and when you get out of the ditch don’t forget to fill them up again.

Stalling

If you stall with your tailpipe under water, get towed out and pull the spark plugs before starting the engine again. A cylinder full of water can destroy an engine. When the plugs are out, however, the water will be safely ejected.

Obstacles

Go slowly over obstacles. Pull the hand brake a little for tension on the drive line to slow the vehicle and enable you to accelerate gently over.

Steering

Always hold the steering wheel with thumbs out when you’re off-road. If you hit a ditch or obstacle the wheel could spin too fast and hurt your thumbs. Keeping them out helps prevent injury. Keep your hands and arms inside the truck to avoid accidents.

Tools & Spares

Keep the following with you:

  • A hi-lift jack
  • Steel wire
  • Spare tyre and plug kit

Safety

  • Wear a safety belt
  • Don’t travel alone in unusual places
  • Have a cell phone on you
  • Don’t drink alcohol when driving
  • Get back on the tar road before dark
  • Give fellow 4X4 drivers on the track plenty of space
  • Don’t race or churn up the soil needlessly.

Respect

Respect the land, the other people using the trail and the vehicle! Douse campfires, don’t litter (this includes cigarette butts), stick to trails so as to avoid damaging the plant life.

Leave your ego at home and remember it’s about having fun!

Unrestricted travel: once you hire the car from any rental hiring company, the car becomes ‘’yours’’ during that rental period. It’s you to determine when and where to go and you the one behind the seat. In your self-drive tour, you can reach to each and every part of the country including national park while driving at your own pace. However, if your itinerary involves crossing boarder, you are advised to inform the car rental company in advance so that they can write you a letter that gives you authority to cross the hired car to any East African country. And also you are advised to get an East African Visa for easy access to all these East African countries. If you are travelling within the capital city Kampala you can hire a 2WD. however, for any tour outside Kampala you are required to hire 4×4 WD car rental like the land cruisers, safari van/supper custom,  Rav4 among others.

Better game viewing experience:  Remember when hiring a car from the car hiring agency, it’s your choice to choose which car that will suit your desire while on the safari. If you are coming for a wildlife tour, hiring a car with a pop-up roof is very essential. Cars with Pop-up roof include Land-cruiser both long and short, supper custom/Van, these pop-up vehicles will give a chance for a better game viewing in the park, and you can sit at the top of the vehicle and view games from a long distance and also take good photography. Uganda is gifted with a wide biodiversity of animal species so a self-dive safari to one or two Uganda national parks will give you a wonderful wildlife memorable experience during a game drive. you can drive anywhere in the park for better viewing of animals,

Total and memorable experience: One will have a total experience, given the fact that one is in the driving seat, he/she is capable of exploring the entire country depending on your designed itinerary. It’s you to determine where to stop or going at your convenience, you’re the one to determine driving speed from one destination to another, however, you should remember that the driving speed in Uganda is 80km/h and the driving speed in Uganda’s national park is 40km/h. On your self-drive safari, you get a better feel of the country and you are free to make a stopover to admire nature.

You have the right to hire the car you need: If you want to hire the car on self-drive, you have the right to hire the car you need depending on your destination. If you are going for a business, you need to hire a luxurious car that will make you look cooperate, if you re going for a town tour, you can hire a 2WD since the roads are not tough like in many remote areas and for a safari you are required to hire a 4×4 safari vehicle. You must also consider the number of people you are travelling with, for a group tour, safari van or supper custom does it better, and if you are 2 or 3 a Toyota Rav4 OR land cruiser are better.  So ask the car rental company the car you need, they will provide.

Echoes of the bush: If you hire the car with camping gears, you pitch your tents in the bush, so this is more adventurous as you will be in position to feel the sounds of the bush in a safety of your roof tent something that will really make you feel that you’re on an adventurous safaris in Africa.  You will hear birds sing in the forest, insects, animals and many forest dwellers.
