Vanishing Kings: Namibia’s Desert Lions

0
Namibia Desert Lions

With exceptional surviving skills lions roam the Namib Desert! On the brink of extinction, their future is at risk, and now a brotherhood of five young lions holds the key to the future of their kind. Two years ago an old queen and her two daughters gave birth to a total of five male cubs and despite the hardships of the desert they have managed to raise them successfully. But soon the time will come for the ‘Five Musketeers’ to continue life on their own, when their mothers begin their search for one of the last remaining adult male lions. Faced with many unforeseen challenges the five young males need to conquer the oldest desert on earth on their epic journey to adulthood.

In this 1-hour HD special we discover an extraordinary predator in one of the most remote wilderness areas in the world. Now for the first time ever in this extreme and epic landscape, we can observe, over an extended period, the secret lives of true desert lions. They roam the rugged mountains, the majestic sand dunes, the endless gravel plains and legend has it they prowl the beaches of the Skeleton Coast. With the help of lion researcher Dr. Philip Stander and sophisticated satellite tracking technology we will get the unique opportunity to witness the natural behaviour of one of the rarest kinds of lion. His lifelong devotion reveals an epic journey of hardship and triumph.

The blue chip style of the film will not be affected by the few and short appearances of the scientist who has collared all the lions for their own sake. He is aware that faced with the already ruthless elements of the desert there are even more dangers on the horizon: local villagers, poachers and hunters pose a threat to the survival of the population. And once the lions attack cattle the herders will unhesitatingly kill them. Philip Stander’s research over the past 17 years indicates that now more than ever our Five Musketeers’ survival is crucial. Without adult male lions, prides will fall apart and desert lions will vanish before our very eyes…

5 Things to Know to Help You Prepare for an African Safari

0

Have you ever been on an African safari? Do you want to be on one? Have you ready started planning to travel outside the world that you’re not used to?  Are you interested in taking a safari in Rwanda? Do you even know what a safari is? Well you sure don’t have to think much about it, because safaris are trips that can be taken by an individual or a group.

Safaris in Africa offer a lot of amazing experiences! You can chose to go game viewing in natural game parks, watch primates in tropical rain forest, or even go hunting in private ranches or game parks in Southern Africa.  Would you like to see the big five or you are interested in taking an ecotour and have the time of your life.

Though in the past, safaris were taken as hunting expedition that at the end of the day resulted in a blood bath of animals, many African countries have moved on and take on the path of ecotourism – ie offering friendly safaris in Africa. In this modern age due to conservation and environmental protection purposes, it’s much more common for a safari to involve taking photographs or simply viewing animals in the Wilderness.

Preparing to go on a safari may seem to be a little intimidating or a daunting task. But however, when the individual breaks it down into manageable pieces, it can become quite easy that you won’t even believe it. The first step is to determine what you would like to do when you go on the safari. Are you interested in taking traditional hunting safaris?

Photography Safaris

Do you want to take specific photographs of various kinds of wildlife? Are you interested in having more authentic experiences and staying in their traditional villages, or would you prefer more comfort driven adventures with five star hotels and luxury transportation? All of these have to be considered before you can decide on what safari you would like to take, but don’t forget the quotation; yes money is also very important because at the end of the end it make the safari happen leaving you with a long time memory to treasure for the rest of your life.

Rhino Conservation Botswana: First Black Rhino Born

0
Young Black Rhino

Rhino Conservation Botswana are over the moon to announce the recently relocated black rhino population’s first birth in the Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana.  Since the start of its Botswana Wild Rhino Project in 2001, there has been a small but extremely dedicated group of people involved in monitoring the rhino populations of northern Botswana.

Wilderness Safaris, in partnership with the Botswana Department of Wildlife and National Parks and major security assistance from the Botswana Defence Force, continue to make strides in stepping up their efforts to secure the survival of the rhino. As we shared this past summer, the company was delighted to announce the successful capture of a small founder population of critically endangered black rhino.

Monitoring black rhinos is not a job for the faint of heart. These magnificent animals are browsers by nature and are particularly fond of hanging out in thick bush that sometimes appear impenetrable, and are certainly not a very natural habitat for humans on foot. It was in one of these thickets that one dedicated rhino monitoring officer and his three Botswana Defense Force companions ventured into in search of a large female black rhino who was known to have a liking for the leaves of the guarri bushes which grew in dense clusters in that area.

Normally, they would have left her alone to get on with her life except for the fact that they knew she was heavily pregnant. With great tracking skills, they managed to locate her right in the very heart of this difficult bush, and to their great joy and excitement, saw that she indeed had a very small calf with her, which they estimated to be no more than a few days old!  We look forward to learning more about this baby calf in the months to come.

Background

The re-introduction of a small population of white rhino as well as four black rhino to the Moremi Game Reserve over the last thirteen years has proven to be a considerable success with the white rhinos having increased from twenty seven individuals to over sixty through successful breeding, whilst the black rhinos, with the birth of the calf,  now number five animals.  Rhino Conservation Botswana was formed with a very clear mandate in mind. To train and properly equip up to five new rhino monitoring teams and to outfit a centralized management and data co-ordination centre to ensure all wild rhinos are regularly sighted and identified and biological data is properly collected, collated, disseminated and stored.

Angama Safari Lodge

Opening 1 June 2015. Angama, named after the Swahili word ‘to be suspended mid-air’, is literally perched on the edge of the Rift Valley escarpment and sees each tented suite and guest area seemingly hanging on the edge with views that quite simply take your breath away. End-to-end glass fronts, sweeping canvas, polished parquet floors, just the right amount of furniture and decks overhang the Masaai Mara below. Guests wake up to hot-air balloons sailing past the 10m wide floor-to-ceiling glass fronts of their tented suites. Situated on two of three kopjes, the third was featured in the film Out of Africa, remains untouched and will be Angama Mara’s picnic spot.

What defines Angama Mara from other safari lodges is its location on a site almost without equal. Every tented suite shares a 180° view of the Mara below, possibly the best-known game reserve in the world, and one which consistently delivers extraordinary viewing of all Africa’s great mammals, and The Great Migration from July to October each year. Angama Mara guests descend a private track directly from the lodge to the most beautiful, least visited and best-managed part of the reserve – The Mara Triangle.

The Out of Africa back-story adds romance and nostalgia to the guest experience – when they arrive at the lodge guests will feel as if they have been there before. And where else in Africa can you wake up to the sight of balloons floating gently by at the foot of your bed in the very heart of Maasailand?

Click on the video to fly above, beyond and around Angama Mara. Witness the untouched beauty of their site before building commenced, and experience how the light and clouds never sit still on the vast grasslands of the Mara below…

Volcanoes National Park, the Best Place to See Gorillas

0

Different visitors to Africa usually discuss about the world’s number one gorilla tracking destination but Volcanoes National park rates best on the many gorilla tracking national parks in the East Africa. Volcanoes National Park (PNV) is also the a great destination to  track golden monkeys as well as other forest primates and  being in the same home with gorillas, gorilla tracking visitors find it easy to track both gorillas and golden monkeys on one Gorilla tracking tour. No wonder the park natural beauty inspired the American conservationist Dian Fossey who later chose to stay and live close to the park primates until when she was called. Today her former home and grave is another attraction in volcanoes national park and guests enjoy the rewarding hike to the tomb especially in the afternoon after the day’s gorilla trekking adventure.

In the move Gorillas in the Mist, an American drama film that was directed by Micheal Apted and Staring Dian Fossey as a naturalist presents a true story about conservation work in Rwanda and mountain gorillas another reason why many gorilla visitors chose Rwanda volcanoes national park as the untouched paradise for life time gorilla tracking memories. Volcanoes National park a home to some active volcanoes is a centre of the rare primate habitants in the world and situated in just 2.5 hours drive distance from Kigali Rwanda’s capital. In 2005, in a bid to boost conservation and gorilla tours in Volcanoes national park, Rwanda introduced the annual baby naming ceremony for baby gorillas a conservation event that is celebrated every year as a sign of conservation success. The park is usually open for all visitors local and international and gorilla tracking permits are a must to only those willing to track the mountain gorillas. However, to get the permits you need to find a gorilla safari company that can book you one or book yourself one directly at the Rwanda park headquarters.

Choosing to track gorillas in Rwanda is by choice but the amazing experience will drive you back one more time or advise friends and relatives to experience the outstanding in the beautiful land of thousand hills. When looking at recent photos of former gorilla visitors, Rwanda gorilla treks are too captivating and just enough to track gorillas in volcanoes National park. The stunning scenery and gorillas express the true beauty of the park taming you to just go gorilla tracking. What you can see on the average day are the mountain gorillas or golden monkeys, birds, monkeys, forest habitats, natural trees and plants ,the Dian Fossey research center  and stunning great views of mountains , hills, farm lands and home steads. So after experiences all you dream adventures at the park  with an extra day but without further plans, think of a leisure peaceful rest in Gisenyi  on Lake Kivu  and enjoy cool winds ,sand, fresh sun and warm weather  as you play in the sand and water. Also heading back to Kigali city for a day city tour would be a nice thing to discover the country’s beauty even more.

Cheetah Chases Impala Into Tourists Car

0

The scene Kruger National Park, in South Africa. An Impala was video taped skillfully escaping two cheetahs – by taking a leap of faith into a carload of tourists on safari.

The terrified animal was seconds away from becoming the cheetahs dinner when it saw the window, and jumped for the opportunity. This dramatic video was shot using an iPhone by 20 year old  Samantha Pittendrigh, who was on holiday with her family.

Alright, my first question when I heard about this story was who goes on safari and leaves their window open. It is winter in South Africa in June/July so one can not say that it what too hot, and there was no air conditioning in the car.

Then they say that the impala was lucky and managed to find its way through the window, what if that is exactly what it was planning to do? It saw an opening and it went straight for it the same way any of us would do.

Giraffe Chasing Jeep On Safari for Two Miles

0

So you pay for your safari, then you go on safari but whilst on safari the strangest thing happens to you. A giraffe starts chasing your open top jeep. I don’t know about you but the last animal I would have been scared off before going on safari would have been a giraffe. A lion definitely, a leopard, a buffalo, a rhino maybe even a hippo… but a giraffe?? Never!!

Upon further investigation, it turns out that giraffes can actually be very dangerous especially when they are hormonal like the one in the video below. It chased this jeep for over 5 km, I have no idea what the plan was since it is a herbivore. But hey with the way the climate is changing these days you never know what this giraffe could be able to do to you. So yes, the best thing to do would be to ruuuuuun for dear life or as in this video drive until you start to run out of road. This happened in South Africa btw.

At which point you can start banging on the side or the jeep and making ridiculous amounts of noise hoping that this will scare away your stalker. As Anthony the weatherman at a local news station said in response to this video ‘Hey you get what you pay for!’. I think he is dead on, who wants to hear a story about being chased up a tree by a lion or cheetah. Been there done that got the t-shirt. Try something new and funky like a 15 foot tall super long stride taking hormonal giraffe. Now THAT is a safari story!
