Rainfall in the bush means wildlife sightings galore

0
African Wildlife

From baron landscapes to animals in distress, the drought that the Greater Kruger has been experiencing has been very well documented over the past few months.

However, it’s all part of natures cycle and as hard as it is to take a step back and remove our emotions from the situation, it must be done. One thing I have learnt is that nature will always sort itself out without human interference and, even in the most trying times, it will provide.

Recently we have been seeing animals beginning to circum to the harsh conditions, particularly the buffalos and hippo. This means a time of plenty for the predators, balancing out the eco system as nature does. However, it is never easy to just sit back and watch it happen and just when we were beginning to think of stepping in, nature gave us the answer. The heavens opened up and we received some much-needed rain. Although not enough to break the drought, it was enough to fill dams and start the process of new plant growth. Being able to witness this transformation is an amazing spectacle as within a day of it raining the bush erupted with new growth.

African Warthog

Over the last week, the animals have all come out and shown themselves in celebration and we have enjoyed some incredible sightings here in the Timbavati. Here are some of our latest sightings:

A young male leopard peers at us through a thicket. He had stashed his kill in this bush to escape the prying eyes of vultures and other scavengers.

Warthogs feeding on the dry meat of an old giraffe carcass. They are possibly trying to get extra nutrients during this harsh time of drought.

A male lion listening to the distant calls of a lioness before heading off on a night time patrol.

African Buffaloes

Buffalo have probably been the hardest hit by the drought and it can clearly be seen in their poor condition. Now that there is some new grass growth, they should begin to fatten up once again.

An elephant calf was born just after the rains. He came into this world at just the right time, with an abundance of food for his mom to feed on which will in turn allow her to produce milk for this baby.

Often, in trying times, different species are forced together and we have been seeing a lot of this lately especially when it comes to the water dependant animals like rhino and elephant.

Although it was a reprieve from the drought it was only a small one and we hope that the rains continue to fall and properly break the drought. We have all become weather watchers and by the looks of it, there is plenty for rain to come in the coming weeks, so we continue to hold thumbs and pray for even more relief.

Trekking in Africa on the Equator takes you to a unique up close personal experience full of spectacle views and wildlife. On a safari in Uganda it’s fun to discover the best treks in Africa in Mountain Rwenzori the wettest place in Africa where curiosity won’t let you sleep. The change to warm clothes/garments is a must to embrace the mountain low temperatures with the hikes seeming tough as you approach the highest hut of Elena at 4500m above sea level.

Only a few lucky people hike the Rwenzori mountain to the peak since the mountain god-(Kitasamba) has rules and regulations which many tourists fail to fulfill-no having sex while on the mountain, don’t complain about rain since it’s an important aspect in the mountain name Rwenzori which means rain and others. Another aspect of health and fitness also limit many travelers from taking on these magnificent hikes to the extent that some just hike for a day. It’s good for one to carry first aid medicine just in case sickness strikes you on the way, food, water, boots, the axe and other necessities are provided by the mountaineering service or the travel expert in charge of your hiking adventure.

Walking across the glacier isn’t easy so you have to be in at least groups of two or three roped together. The mountain porters say that the glaciers are reducing at a shocking rate and are predicted to disappear in 10 years time. According to the guest records the number of visitors who hike the mountain is less compared to what they expect and in future some guest won’t be in position to see any glaciers. The peaks are hard to find and spot which makes it more interesting.

Most tourist like visiting the Equatorial snow peaks located just miles north of the equator, the highest of these – Mount Stanley (5,109m), Speke (4,890m) and Baker (4,843m) – all bear permanent snow and glaciers. The snow peaks can be reached by hiking the Central Circuit and Kilembe Trails. Besides you can also enjoy the lovely land formations of the misty, boggy, glacier-carved valleys, lakes , Rubonis among others. You might have reasons to visit Africa but Rwenzori Mountain should be among your priorities for Hiking Lovers.

The park of colorful diversity Queen Elizabeth Park is characterized by stunning range of mountain back drop that have earned it a title of the most eye catching point of the mountain of the moon. Queen Elizabeth is also the most close wildlife pare to Bwindi forest  the great gorilla tracking paradise in Uganda and a home to the people of the forest famously known as the Batwa.

Most visitors to Bwindi Forest on gorilla tracking tours make stops in the park to see series of impressive wildlife, lakes, birds, plant life and primates before experiencing the life changing encounter of mountain gorillas in Bwindi forest. A trip to Queen Elizabeth is unforgettable especially if combined with a visit to Bwindi forest national park. If backpacking through Uganda would advise you to travel with a local friend from Uganda or guide  who have spend some good time working and exploring the pearl of Africa. But if you don’t have any you can use a Uganda travel agency to take you through the entire park experience.

There is a lot to do in Queen Elizabeth national park after landing in Entebbe international airport and get picked by your trip organizer or rent a car to drive to the park by you. You will need to use a safari van with a pop up in order to enjoy the morning and afternoon game drives through the park. Plan for a six hour drive from Uganda’s capital to the parks gate or lodge of residence. Besides you need to leave the city quite early in order to be at the park in the late afternoon for some evening sightseeing. Once you arrive at your lodge, settle down, freshen up and then head out to the park for some evening fun. The sunset game drive is too incredible a good timing to spot most park wildlife, birds even the sunset itself in many park corners. During this ride elephants are never missed together with other wildlife. Three days are just enough for one to explore the park wildlife, primates and all other adventures. Also multiple animals can be spotted on a fresh morning starting at 6.00am after a morning cup of tea. In most cases many are found just outside your lodge compound before even entering park game viewing area.

It’s hard to tell how exciting it feels to spot your favorite wildlife in unexpected manner. Afternoons again is more joyful during the launch cruise on the Kazinga channel looking at the hippo concentration, birds and other wildlife at the river bank. However, the most satisfying moment is when you spot leopards and lions in the wilderness as they make moves to a wonderful fatty meal for the day.  A lot can be spotted and seen but each sighting is different. Buffaloes roam around the plains, colorful kobs sunbath in the short grass vegetation, a group of baboons sear at you and even welcome you to their  calm hospitable home, chimpanzees keep chasing wind in the drama of playing with the little ones, birds are guests in every angle even in times for meals, lions chill up in  tree branches waiting for whoever  enters their territory   among others. All days in Queen Elizabeth National park consist of  game drives, launch cruise to sunset, chimpanzee treks, forest walks to Maramagambo forest, balloon safari ride in the park. However, never had car snacks during any park activity but all meals where had at the lodge of residence.

This makes it one of the biggest national parks on earth. In the year 1938, the Kissama National Park was established for being used as an animal reserve.  In the year 1957 i.e. almost after 2 decades of its inception, the park obtained the designation of national park. During this time the area was under the rule of Portuguese people and thus the park obtained a Portuguese name.

The Kissama National Park used be the home to a wide range of animal species; especially the game varieties like Giant sables and elephants. However, during the civil war, the park encountered incessant poaching incidents, which resulted in decrease in the animal population of the national park.

In the year 2001, a community called Kissama Foundation consisted of South Africans and Angolans started a movement called ‘Operation Noahs Ark’. This movement involves the act of transporting animals, particularly elephants from the neighboring countries of South Africa and Botswana. The animals that are transported in Kissama National Park are from the overpopulated parks of their native countries.

Explore Livingstone Waterfalls in DR Congo

0

If you are looking for a place to visit near Kinshasa, the Livingstone falls is just a stone throw away from you. The Livingstone Falls, also known as the “Chutes de Livingstone” in French was named after the Explorer David Livingstone and comprises of a sequence of rapids on the lower course of the Congo River in the western side of Equatorial Africa, downstream from the Malebo Plunge Pool in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Livingstone falls is comprised of a succession of breathtaking rapids falling at 900 feet (274 meters) in 220 miles (354 kilometers), passing over 32 large and magnificent rapids with a total drop of 260 meters and stops at Matadi in Kongo Central (former Bas-Congo). Did you know that the mighty Congo River has the second largest/fastest flow rate in the World after the Amazon River of Southern America? It is even surprising that the Amazon River has no waterfalls or even rapids, of course except next to its source. This is why you need to visit the Congo River that is the second fastest in the World, but has over 32 large and breathtaking rapids.

The lowest rapids of the mind-blowing Livingstone falls are therefore the World’s largest waterfalls in terms of flow rate, making them appear inform of rapids. When the giant Congo River is squeezed through unbelievably narrow gorge of sometimes less than 260 meters wide and meanders between mountain ranges, it produces the impressive Livingstone waterfalls which are sometimes believed to be rapids because of the appearance.  What even makes the site more impressive is the fact that the Inga waterfalls also belong to the large Livingstone falls and are found on the lower section (of course not the lowest)of the Livingstone falls. It’s even difficult to determine the exact width of the Inga falls because the width of the Congo River fluctuates from less than 260 meters to more than 4 kilometers throughout the rapids. Breathtaking thresholds of the rapids at the sharp bend of the Congo River are approximately 3.6 meters wide.

Livingstone waterfalls for years have hindered the Colonization of the Central African country because the falls were totally impassable and inaccessible with the boats and ships. It is not surprising that the mighty Congo River from more than 10 meters wide whirlpools and there are numerous cliffs and the speed of the stream sometimes reaches 50 kilometers per hour which makes the entire sighting breathtaking. The stream has eroded deep in the rock making it the deepest riverbed in the entire world with depth going beyond 230 meters/754 feet. There are technically deeper Rivers in the world but surprisingly their Riverbeds have been formed by other factors such as glaciers not like the one of River Congo.

There are numerous remarkable underwater waterfalls in some places within the Livingstone falls, and is where the stream passes the rock thresholds before speeding up and falling deeper in the Canyons that are invisible for above the water.

However, with the construction of hydroelectric power plants, some parts of the Congo River or stream don’t reach the Inga waterfalls. It is said that the strength of the stream within Livingstone waterfalls could not cover the electricity needs for the major part of Africa. Even with development, the only hope is for the Government of DRC to preserve the spectacular Inga waterfalls and the entire Livingstone waterfalls.

In conclusion, the Livingstone waterfalls are some of the most breathtaking sites within the Democratic Republic of Congo and Africa in general because of the size and appearance of the falls.
