Meet the Mountain Gorillas & Chimpanzees in Uganda

0

Are you planning to visit Uganda for a memorable experience? Mountain Gorilla trekking and Chimp tracking are regarded as one of the most exhilarating safari activities one should not miss when on a Uganda safari. As named by Sir Churchill “The Pearl of Africa”, Uganda is considered among the commonly known and thrilling destinations to visit on the African continent.

Uganda is geographically located in the Eastern Africa, it shares borders with Kenya in the East, Rwanda in its south western side, Tanzania in the South, Democratic Republic of Congo in the West and South Sudan in the North.

Many travelers have different reasons as to why they spare their precious time and visit this amazing destination. The main reason is its diverse Wildlife species including Wild animals, Primates, insect species, reptiles plus the many bird species that recorded in the country. Wildlife and other physical touristic features are the main reasons why the first European explorer Sir Winston Churchill decided to declare this country as “The Pearl of Africa”.

Some of the major key attracting factors that lead to high flow of tourists from multiple countries include ease of accessibility, wide range of attractions, favorable climatic conditions, hospitable people, good service providers, flexibility, stable financial status and stable security.

How to reach Uganda

The main entrance to Uganda is by air transport and Uganda’s main airport is Entebbe international airport. The airport is located 37kms south west of Kampala Uganda’s capital city. Uganda can also be accessed via its border posts including Bwela boarder from Congo, Tanzania from Mutukula boarder, Kenya from Malaba, Rwanda from Katuna and Cyanika Boarder, here one can use road transport. In order to be issued with entry permission in Uganda you must have three documentations required at the customs, these documents include valid passport, valid yellow fever vaccination card and entry visa which costs $50 USD per person. Usually in Uganda a passport is considered to be valid only when it’s still six months or more to its expiration date.

Gorilla trekking.

Mountain gorilla trekking is one of the key activities done in Uganda, this activity involves meeting with our closest relatives the endangered Mountain Gorillas deep in the Jungles. The activity is re-chargeable and each person is required to pay $700 per trekking. Gorilla trekking is one of the expensive but selling activities done by very many people who come on a Uganda safari. In order to get a gorilla permit, you are required to book a gorilla permit in time in order to avoid disappointments of last minutes booking,

Gorilla permits are sold on first come first come basis. Owning a gorilla permit is a guarantee for trekking, but it’s not a guarantee for sighting, since mountain gorillas are wild animals they are very difficult to predict, meeting them depends on where they last spent their night from or on were they last fed from. Gorilla trekking is often started in the morning with a briefing which is first conducted at the park offices or starting point to highlight the group of trekkers about how to behave, the dos and don’ts while in the Jungle and in presence of these shy endangered mountain gorillas and also gets you allocated to the ranger range.

After this short briefing from the park wardens, you will follow the ranger guide and an armed officers to start the Journey following the permanently established trails heading to the Jungle in search of these endangered apes (each group is assigned to eight members). Park rangers regularly communicate with Gorilla trackers via radio calls to know where these apes spent their last night.

The trek is unpredictable, it can go from 2 -8 hours passing through steep and sloppy hills and once you locate these apes in the Jungle, tourists are allowed to stay in their presence for only one hour. See them playing with their young ones, feeding, laughing plus taking photos and videos of them. Get to know that you are not allowed to use a flush camera. Once the activity is done, the next session is to leave the forest back to the offices for certificate award. It’s advised to come with packed food and bottled water when you are going for your Gorilla trek, this is because most of the time, lunch time reaches when you are still in the forest. Gorilla trekking is regarded as incomparable activity one should not love to miss.

Chimpanzee tracking.

Without any doubt, chimpanzee trekking is another thrilling adventure tour one should not love to miss when on a Uganda safari. Chimpanzees are known as the second closest relative to human sharing almost 97% of human DNA make-up. Like mountain gorilla trekking, the activity requires some levels of physical fitness as the trek may go from 1-6 hours while in the jungle searching for them. The activity involves moving in a group following the permanently established routes heading to the Jungle in search for these primates. In the process of searching them, you are advised that you move slowly and maintain your voice at low tone while in the Jungle such that you do not scare these primates. Once the gorillas are met, you are strictly allowed only one hour with them learning their behaviors as well as taking as many photos as possible, however you are not allowed to use flash cameras, the chimps may feel threatened. Watch them feeding, laughing, swinging in tree branches it’s a great experience.

In order to participate in this wonderful experience, one requires a permit that goes for $200 USD per person in Kibale Forest National Park and one is advised to book this activity in advance to avoid disappointment of last minute booking.

Where to trek the endangered mountain gorillas.

Two places in Uganda hosts these endangered apes, one is bwindi impenetrable national park and the other is Mgahinga gorilla forest national park. These parks offers exciting gorilla trekking experience and many visitors to Uganda come specifically to see these endangered apes in their natural habitat deep in the jungle.  Both parks are located in the South western part of Uganda along Uganda’s border with Democratic Republic of Congo.

When comparing the best gorilla trekking destination among the two parks, bwindi Impenetrable National park takes it all, the park has the biggest percentage of Uganda’s remaining Gorilla population with the biggest number of gorilla families (over 12 habituated gorilla families that enjoy the cool atmospheres in its four major sectors which include Buhoma sector, Nkuringo, Ruhija and Rushaga sector. Each sector has more than two Gorilla families.

Where to trek our closest relatives the Chimps.

Uganda has very many exhilarating places to go for the chimpanzee primates while on a Uganda safari these include Murchison falls National Park in Budongo forest, Queen Elizabeth National Park in Kyambura gorge side, Kibale Forest National Park where variety of Chimpanzee primates are habituated. Other places include the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary a home to orphanage gorillas. It is located on the waters of Lake Victoria on Ngamba Island which is part of Koome group of islands

Top 5 Adventure Safari Activities You Must Do

0
Africa Safari

It is true that we all travel for different reasons, and our tastes and likes vary. However, when coming for a holiday in Africa, I think there are some places you just have to visit, and some activities you must undertake to enjoy a complete African safari experience. I have compiled a list of what I consider the top ten holiday activities in Africa. You may not be able to do all of them during one visit, unless of course you have a lot of time. But with proper planning, you can cover aspects of all of them in at least two trips to Africa.

1. Wildlife safaris

African Lion

If you have time for only one safari activity, then wildlife safaris are the obvious choice, especially if the closest you have ever come to an African wild animal is in a zoo. Among all African animals, the big five (lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, and leopard) are the most popular, and perhaps most fascinating to observe. The experience of seeing them and other animals in their natural habitat is indeed very amazing. No wonder the word “African safari” is almost synonymous with wildlife safaris.

There are so many places in Africa that give you a rewarding wildlife experience, top on the list being Masai Mara game reserve in Kenya, South Africa’s Kruger national park, and Serengeti national park in Tanzania. You can also have an equally (or even more) satisfying safari experience in other less known wildlife destinations like Etosha national park in Namibia, South Luangwa national park in Zambia, and Chobe national park in Botswana .

For a first-time visit to Africa, I would recommend starting with any of the parks mentioned above. However, during subsequent travels, you can choose wildlife destinations that meet your unique tastes. If for example you are interested in the gorillas, chimpanzees and other apes, you should visit the game reserves in Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC eg. Bwindi impenetrable forest national park in Uganda.

2. Sightseeing tours:

Apart from just the animals, you will find a lot more to see in Africa, from awe-inspiring natural land features and beautiful landscapes, to many historical man-made structures. Egypt in North Africa is without doubt the favourite destination for sightseeing. All of Egypt’s great sites reflect the country’s rich history dating back to the days of the Pharaohs. The Egyptian pyramids, the Sphinx at Giza, the valley of the kings, the temples at Abu Simbel, the Karnak temple complex, and the valley of the queens, are some of the best-known sites.

It is not just in Egypt that you find pyramids from ancient days. In fact, some reports estimate that there twice as many pyramids in the Nubian region of Sudan (where the ancient Meroe kingdom was situated) than there are in Egypt. There are also many other interesting historical sites worthy seeing in Ethiopia including the Lalibela monolithic churches, the obelisks in Axum, the medieval castles in Gondar, and the walled Gondar city. In Mali in West Africa, the ancient city of Djenne is an equally fascinating site. The city is home to the world’s largest mud brick building, the great mosque of Djenne.

Africa’s natural land features you should see include the mighty Victoria falls (Mosi oa Tunya) at the Zambia – Zimbabwe border, the giant sand dunes of Sossusvlei in Namibia, the Okavango delta in Botswana, and Fish river canyon in Namibia.

3. Cultural Safaris
It is indisputable that the African culture is rich and very diverse. Among the thousands of African ethnic groups however, there are a few that stand out because of their unique way of life and traditions, the Masai tribe being the top-most. There is arguably no better way to appreciate the Masai culture than visiting a Masai village and possibly spending some nights there. This is not for the faint-hearted though. An easier alternative would be to visit a Masai village during your safari in Kenya.

Other African ethnic groups with interesting cultures and that you may want to visit include the Samburu and Turkana of Kenya, and the Swahili found along the coast of East Africa.

4. Beach Luxury Vacation

While several African countries have beautiful and clean beaches suited for a luxury holiday, the Seychelles Islands, Mauritius Island, and Zanzibar are perhaps the most renowned and most popular beach destinations. No wonder these three islands, more so the islands of Seychelles, are most favoured by honeymooners. Apart from these three Islands however, you can have an equally enjoyable beach vacation in other places like Kenya’s south coast (Diani, Chale Island etc.), north coast (Malindi, Mtwapa, Lamu Island etc), Mozambique (Bazaruto, Quirimbas etc.), the Comoros Island, among many others.

5. Mountaineering, and Adventure Expeditions

Mount Kenya: Africa's second highest mountain after Tanzania's Mt. Kilimanjaro

For quite obvious reasons, Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania ranks high among Africa’s adventure destinations. Though it is the highest mountain in Africa, it is also the most accessible. You do not need any special mountaineering equipment to get to Uhuru peak, the highest peak. Any reasonably healthy person can make it to the top especially if they climb slowly. This is unlike the more rugged Mount Kenya, where the highest you can get without mountain climbing gear is Point Lenana, at 4985 meters above sea level. Only accomplished mountaineers attempt to get to the higher peaks of Batian and Nelion.

Mount Meru in Tanzania, the Rwenzori mountain range and the Virunga mountains in Uganda and neighboring countries are some of the other African mountains suitable for climbing or trekking expeditions.

There are lots of other activities for an adventure safari in Africa. You can fly over the Victoria falls on a microlight helicopter, go for gorilla tracking expeditions in the great Lakes region, canoeing, white water rafting, and kayaking (e.g in Sagana and Nanyuki in Kenya), skydiving (e.g in the annual Diani boogie in Kenya), snorkeling and white shark diving in South Africa, overlanding from Cairo Egypt to Cape Town in South Africa, etc.

Go On a Luxury Safari in Tanzania and Rwanda

0

Are you planning to take a luxury safari in East Africa? My family and I decided to visit Tanzania and Rwanda on August 2020 and it was very difficult time of Covid-19. During the start of the safari planning we wanted to do a one-week safari and staying in premium lodges and Singita game lodges and exclusive camps were our choice to stay.

But on research about these lodges we found that they can offer the same services in Rwanda, and this country is famously known for mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park and you can experience gorilla safari holiday.

We later decided to do a combined trip in Tanzania and Rwanda and we contacted Eco Tours Rwanda requesting a package of that type. We received the reply to our first email with well detailed 10 Day Luxury Tanzania Rwanda Safari from their travel consultant (Moses) and we felt 100% comfortable, as we could tell this company has been organizing tours for a very long time.

Moses was so fast and positively comprehensive to our changes and changes to the itineraries were handled with ease. Though, this is hard to arrange a successful premium tour, this company made it for us. We changed our plans several times and finally Moses found a great option for us of staying in Singita Serengeti lodge and then Kwitonda Lodge or Kataza House. Moses organized a premium tour with visit of Serengeti National Park with the 03 nights stay at Mara River Tented Lodge in Lamai and here you will have exclusive view of the great wildebeest migration and after stayed at Sabora Tented Camp in Grumeti – Tanzania for 3 nights and thereafter, visit Kigali and Volcanoes National Park.

While on your premium tour in Serengeti and staying at Singita lodges and exclusive camps you will have it all, from the astonishing staying in balcony rooms offering the undulating view of the park. Take scenic photographic game drives and walking safaris. Enjoy the indoor activities like wellness, wine experience, swimming among others.

We enjoyed our safari because on arrival the Gran Melia Arusha Hotel picked us for an overnight stay and then on the next day, we took the Grumeti Air charter to the Lamai airstrip and then transferred to Singita Mara Tented Camp. Later back to Kilimanjaro we took the same flight and board our flight to Kigali International Airport, drive to Volcanoes where we had the amazing gorilla experience in the park.

From the first day in Rwanda, when we met our driver who was supposed to accompany us every day, we felt comfortably, incredibly friendly and very funny with him.

Every day we enjoyed our trip with him, with many a discussion about Rwanda culture and traditions. He was never even a minute late. Always fresh and cheerful in the morning and beautifully dressed. And with a smile on his face.

I hope that someday we will have another opportunity to visit East Africa including Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda again – and we would love to do some great wildebeest game viewing and hiking in the Serengeti, Virunga and Bwindi mountains, and sure, visit the big gorillas and other monkeys.

Therefore, I want to say that when you travel with Eco Tours Rwanda you will never go wrong – this is a highly professional but friendly company that goes the extra mile to make sure you have an amazing experience in these beautiful and green countries Tanzania and Rwanda.

Exploring the Benefits of Booking an All Inclusive Safari

0
Kenya Safari

Unlike visiting a resort where you possibly limited into one location, when visiting Africa you could see more diverse wildlife, scenic landscapes and discover unique cultures, or relax even on a short trip. But if you were into visiting remote places like Congo basin rain forest of Central Africa for primate tracking adventures or want follow the wildebeest migration in Eastern Africa you can plan to spend more days on a safari. And the good thing is when you book a safari most of the work is done for you. Travelers can choose their travel time, and determine the length of the trip. Your accommodation, meals and transfers are arranged courtesy of your operator. You will even recommend what other adventures you can do. There are great benefits of choosing an inclusive safari.

Saving on costs

This is possibly the important benefit with an inclusive safari package for a holiday to Africa. Most popular regions like Eastern Africa are vast and if go ahead to book everything like transport, accommodation, meals, the costs will significantly be high in comparison to choosing African safari inclusive package from a tour operator. An experienced operator with experience of the accommodations and places, you can be sure as well to get an inclusive deal that fits in your budget. Of course this does not mean to sacrifice for luxury and comfort lodge but does not either mean booking for a five star lodge at each place you stay.

In addition, you’ll find that many tour operators offer great deals to attract you. Second, there are always promotions during off season to benefit low priced activities and lodge rates, not to mention, you’ll not spend extra money since all things are already included in the price.

Save time when booking

Opting for African inclusive safari, you have nothing to worry about. All you need to do is to choose your travel package, then talk to the tour operator about the dates you prefer to visit Africa. Whichever country you’re based from, your tour operator will greatly handle each important part of your safari than it would consume much time to do on your own. More over there are hotels and lodges which run out of rooms as well as checking for availability of limited wildlife safari permits like gorilla trekking especially during peak seasons. So you’ll have detail booked in advance including hotel reservations, transfer arrangements, purchasing visa which are part of your African safari.

Think about the time you would invest in searching about and booking for different things you want for your safari including hotel, places and activities. These things can be booked at once with inclusive safaris because you pay in advance so is everything planned as well.

Great value for money

Inclusive safaris present an opportunity for travelers to get maximum services from their tour operators. From the moment visitors arrive and picked up, taken for a safari and dropped back at the airport by your guide after the tour, you may not need to incur extra costs unless if you want to do shopping for souvenirs, tipping guides and porters or pay for other services that are excluded from your package. Even most of the lodges near national parks offer free access to amenities like gym, swimming pool, laundry services because they are all already included.

Great accommodation facilities and services

Most of the lodges or hotels organize their own services and entertainment in order to entice their visitors. Usually, you’ll have an African traditional music and dance performances by rural people over an evening fireplace or sunset. If you were visiting African cities, there are night experiences that can be organized such as going to night clubs, enjoying live music and comedy shows among other great fun things.

Diverse round trip experience

When you’re visiting Africa, apart from the popular game viewing destinations in Eastern and southern Africa, there are few less visited tourist spots and unique cultural adventures that you don’t know about. Then you wonder if you’ll get enough time to visit or do each experience while on your safari. African inclusive safaris are designed in such a way that all the most popular tourist activities and attractions are covered to ensure visitors get great value for their money and a memorable safari. In addition to the expected meals, free internet, among others, you’re also offered optional scheduled excursions such as visits to the traditional African cultural village.

Guaranteed safety on a safari

Eastern and southern Africa generally it is safe to visit any of the destinations. Whereas the travel media keeps warning travelers about insecurity in central African states, most travelers may fear to plan their trips because they’re not sure about the safety situations.

However, organized safaris in Africa are always keen with regard to safety situations around destinations they take their clients. So travelers who want to know whether it’s safe visiting post conflict yet biologically rich central African countries like DRC and Republic of Congo Brazzaville, you’ll always be advised on the safety risks of visiting particular attractions. For instance hiking active Mt. Nyiragongo, mountain gorilla trekking or trekking Eastern-lowland gorillas. In addition, your operators also assign to your experienced guides or drivers who know the routes well. Trust your African operator today that you can have a safe and secure safari.

Currently, there are less than 900 mountain gorillas in the whole world! Besides, remarkable moments that you get within the one hour with the mountain gorillas, think about the moment when you are challenging yourself in the steep slopes within gorilla habitat and probably trying to grab some of the near by plants or trees species to gain grip; add that experience with that of trackers when they are clearing the dense vegetation using their machetes to create a path for you, certainly you will appreciate that gorilla trekking is indeed a life changing experience. When planning a safari for instance you want to go to Africa, you need to do a bit of research about the destinations that you want to visit and also follow up reviews of experienced travelers on trip adviser or lonely planet. You will find travel tips whether you are a luxury/budget traveler. This comes to your mind only when you have saved enough money that will sustain you depending on the days you are likely take while in your favorite destination.

So let’s break down the 6 essential things that will help you in planning a perfect safari to Africa.

  1. Decide on which country you want to visit.

Africa is a big continent which you may not tour at once hence you need to select your favorite safari country. Choosing a country to go to is also determined by the list of attractions you are interested to see or activities to do and then create their list.

For instance you might be interested in a few of the things mentioned here, whether you want to see the big five African safari mammals, track mountain gorillas of Bwindi forest in Uganda or Volcanoes National park in Rwanda, follow the great wildebeest migration, participate in white water rafting on river Nile in Uganda, climb Africa’s highest mountain ranges like Mt. Kilimanjaro and the snow capped Mt. Rwenzori or have a unique cultural encounter such as those of the Batwa pygmies (Uganda), Maasai-Mara (Kenya) or the Hadza tribes of Tanzania. This is just a glimpse of things, perhaps you have your own interests but there is a diversity of things to do.

Once you have narrowed at hand the attractions you want to see, it becomes easy to decide which part of Africa you want to visit. For instance the East African countries of Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda have a joint tourist Visa at $100 that you pay once and visit all the three countries where you will experience the big game, big apes, the sun, sea and sand.

  1. Look for a Local Trusted Tour Operator in that Country/ region You Want to Visit

As already noted above you may want to travel from one destination to another which require you to have a safari planner who understands very well the places and wildlife. Though you may want to self drive or plan a safari on your own, still you cannot do all the booking and ground handling. You need a local tour operator who will make a safari itinerary/ package of your interest, book and pay for your visas, attractions, permits, accommodations and transportation

But this depends a lot on your budget if you are traveling privately, a safari might get expensive and cheaper when travelling as a group. Once you create a relationship with a tour operator, ask them to quote for you the price of a safari package and wait for their offer from where you can negotiate for discount. In addition to the tour operator, a guide is also important.

  1. Timing of the Right Season

Another inevitable thing when planning a safari is timing of the right seasons which is connected to the activities or attractions you have already listed. The dry and wet seasons in Africa come with pros and cons for travelers hence you need to time accurately. For instance during the dry seasons when the weather is sunny, hot with short rains game viewing becomes very easy due to drying of vegetation and water pushing most animals to small water points or greener areas.

Most travelers visit southern Africa or East African safari countries during the dry season to encounter the big five mammals in south Africa, Botswana, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya respectively. But this season is often regarded as a peak one hence there are lots of crowds which make prices of activities and accommodations go higher hence you ought to book early.

Apparently, a few highlights of the top wildlife encounter experiences in Africa such as seeing mountain gorillas in Uganda can be done between December to February and June to September though the activity is done all year round. The great wildebeest migration features such as birthing and river crossing can be witnessed between June to August and November.

On the other hand the wet season has much rainfall which can make driving off road or hiking through tropical forests difficult due to muddy trails thus you better have a 4×4 vehicle. However, vegetation gets more green and picturesque; birding and primate viewing like chimpanzee, gorillas or golden monkeys in Uganda and Rwanda becomes easier since the apes move less distances.

  1. Choose a Type of Safari that Suits Your Budget

Depending on your interests, the type of safari determines the cost of the overall trip hence you need to specify whether to use luxury or budget/overland safaris. For luxury safaris expect to pay much money since they are inclusive of everything such as comfort accommodations while budget/overland safaris offer affordable packages which may include camping, self driving or catering.

Another factor to consider is whether you want to use drive overland or fly in safaris. Overland safaris give travelers a chance to see attractions en route but may not save time depending on the distances between attractions whereas fly in safaris saves time but you have few options to see places while on the plane.

  1. Define the Time/ Length of Days for Your Safari

The lengthy of your stay in a particular destination will realistically increase the costs of your safari budget and no one wants to exceed what he/she cannot manage to pay. Therefore you will need to be flexible in case you need to extend the pre-designed itinerary and pay for extra days or nights. Determine the time and places/parks you want to visit and how much it costs.

  1. Prepare What to Pack

Your packing list may range from wearing gears, cameras and medications to documents. But the general rule is you should endeavor to keep your luggage as light as possible. Planning to visit Africa, you need to be aware of the unfavorable weather conditions such as hot and burning, high rainfall amounts. Hence you need good clothing to put on during and after the activities.

In addition to both favorable and unfavorable weather, some areas in equatorial tropical forests of east Africa have malaria while others are malaria free. Thus packing medication or taking vaccines such yellow fever vaccination is very important for your safety and health.

No doubt you need a passport to visit Africa which you will use to apply for a particular country’s tourist visa. Read carefully the travel advisories to avoid scams and hackers and also check if you need travel insurance in case of any emergency.

For the travelers who like to familiarize with destinations, you will have to purchase travel guide books and maps. However, it’s better to relate with your guides/ operators while in the wilderness however much you may know the areas or roads it does not save you from being attacked by wild animals when you walk alone. You know very well the hungry and fierce African predators like lions, hyenas, leopards can kill hence abide by the rules of the guides.
